FERRIES MANAGER.
CAPT. CAMBRIDGE APPOINTED. N A special meeting of the Eastbourne Ferry Board was held yesterday morning for tho purposo of considering the Eastbourne Council's recommendation regarding the appointment of a manager for the Municipal Ferry Servico. Tho Mayor (Mr. W. J. Organ) presided and after deliberations which were taken in committee, Mr. J. D. Avery (Town Clerk). announced that Captain D. A. Cambridge, who is at present employed bv the borough as captain of the Duchess, had been appointed to the position.
Captain D. A. Cambridge is a native of New Zealand, having been: born at Sumner, Christchurch, and is tho second son of Mr. A. B. Cambridge, of that city. Ho took up the calling of tho sea in'lS99, and, in sailing vessel, voyaged to all parts of tho world until 1906, when ho hold the position of second mate. Ho then joined the Union Steam Ship Company, and soired in various vessels of that line during three years. It is interesting lo note that Captain Cambridge was for some time on tho ill-fated Penguin, and left that vessel just in time to miss the trip on which the disastrous wreck occurred. For two years ho was captain in tho Lyttoltou Harbour ferry service. During that time ho received an offer from Wellington to join tho Duco on a trip to tho Chatham*, but ho declined tho offer. On that voyage the Duco was lost with all hands. In January, 1012, Captain Cambiidgo joined the Wellington Harbour Ferries, Ltd., as captain of the Duchess, and when tho Eastbourne Borough Council took over the service in September of this year he was made senior Tho certificato ho now holds is a foreign-going master's "ticket."
