MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THE SUPERVISION OF CITY MEAT. Exposure for sale of meat not killed in a registered abattoir was tho substanco of a charge preferred against John Bengo, butcher, of Aro Street, on Saturday. Tho case was heard before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. It had come up for hearing about a week ago, when Benge was charged with exposing for sale meat which had not been killed under proper auspices, and also with assaulting Corporation Inspector Watson. The assault case was dealt with, and Bengo was fined, but the charge governing the salo of meat was adjourned. When tho case camo on on Saturday, defendant contended that the meat was faintly stamped. It was not veal, as suggested by Mr. Watson (the informant), who mistook "fiery" beef for a partly skinned calf. He (defendant) recoived his supplies from the Meat Export Co., and from Mr. A. Mooro, of Johnsonville. Alexander Mooro, wholesalo butcher, stated killed at the abattoir. He had nover seen oalves sent out with tho skins; but he had seen this dono when ho was in tho employ of tho Wellington Meat Export Co. The Magistrato remarked that he preferred tho evidence given by Mr. Watson. Defendant would be convicted, and fined £2, and cost £1 125., in default sevon days' imprisonment. FORGERY CHARGE. On a charge of having, on August 1, at Hobart, forged an order on the Savings Department 'of the Commonwealth Bank, for the paymont of £49 2s. 9d., an order purporting to be signed by Claude Forgo, F. w. Millan, and A. Smith, Timothy John Watson was remanded until Ootober 11. CHARGE WITHDRAWN. James Smith and Duncan Brown wero jointly oharged with stealing a suit of olothes, the property of some person unknown. > Police Inspeotor Hendry stated that aocused, who had been fighting and drinking, were found in possession of a suit of clothes. They made contradictory statements as to how they camo by it, and attempted to escape from the police. He was not satisfied with tho explanations, but ho was satisfied that these men could not be convicted, and he asked leave, therefore, to withdraw the charge. This course was sanctioned by tho Bench. OTHER COURT CASES. George Hastings pleaded not guilty to [ a chargo of stealing a quantity of old brass, valued at 55., tho property of Wm. Bosher, and. was remanded until Octobor 6. Elizabeth Musgrave was Bent to gaol for one month on a charge of boing an idle and disorderly person. For insobriety, Norah Nugent was fined 405., and other offenders similarly charged were James Canning, fined 205.; Michael M'Mahon fined 10s.; and Hugh Reid Stewart, fined 20s. Four first offenders were leniently dealt with.
