CITY FIRE RISKS.

* ' COUNCIL REACHES A DECISION. Insurance of tlio corporation ■ fire risks lias been extended to March 31, 1914, with the Standard Insurance Company on behalf of tho underwriters, at tho rate quoted in their recent tender. The Finance Committeo of tho City Council reported to, this effect at last Slight's fortnightly meeting. i The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) explained that tho committeo had considofed this- courso necessary. Tho property ■ had to bo covered and the proposed extension of tlio cover would give tho council time to defino its policy in re,gard to insurance. Councillor, W. J. Thompson expressed tho opinion that as tenders had already been called by tho council, tho lowest tonder should he accepted. Councillor T. C. A. Hislop stated that tlio tenders that had been received wore from a body of-underwriters, whom Councillor Hindmarsh had picturesquely described as "tho ring" and another firm. For tho information of councillors ho would mention that this firm had now joined tho ring. (Laughter.) • The' Mayor said that he was pleased that Councillor Hislop had mentioned tho matter as it saved him the trouble of doing so. This ended the discussion.'
