BLAZE AT OPUNAKE.
HOTEL & TEN SHOPS DESTROYED. PREMISES DYNAMITED BY THE BRIGADE. (By Teleeraph—Press Association.) Hav/flra, October 2. 'A disastrous fire occun'od at Opunako at midnight, resulting in the destruction of Middleton's Hotel and ten shops. Tho fire started about midnight ■in the laundry part of tho hot-el. The premises destroyed were —Middletoil's Hotel, Marshall's office, the Loan and Mercantile store, Mildenliall's (toddler), Cannell's (bookseller), Aitkill's (blacksmith), Dudley's (butcher), Nichol's tea rooms, Watson's boardinghouse, Jackson's office, Holmes and Arthur's store, and Heath's furniture warehouse. The Bank of New Zealand had a very narrow ©scape. A choppy wind pifr. vailed throughough. There was practically no water supply, and the fare spread so rapidly that bv 2.30 a.m. the greater part of tho town had been reduced to ruins, and presented a heart-breaking appearance. The Firo Brigade dynamited Nicol's i tea rooms, and the gap thus made and the concrete of Burton's shop arrested tho progress of the firo on that sido of tho street. Particulurs of insurances aro not yet available.
