THE CIGARETTE SOLDIER.
'AND HIS SEALED CERTIFICATE! (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, October 2. A military defaulter; who was summoned at the Police Court this morning, produced a sealed letter from a medioal man, remarking that ho was not woll enough to do his drill;, "I suppose you do not know what is in this?" remarked Mr. E. 0. Outten, S'.M.,' as he read the letter. "No, your Worship," was the reply. "Well, the doctor says that your oickness is due to cigarette-smoking, and, for that reason, he doe 3 not grant exemption." "What am I to do, then? inquired the youth. "Enook off cigarettes;" was the Magisterial advice. "It is better to do drill than smoke cigarettes. The one does you good, and the other bills you." ' In answer to a further inquiry, the youth said that ho was 20 years of age, and he was then exhorted to take a hold of himself and not lot "'.he cigarette habit take charge of him at his age. "Smoke a pipe, if you want to smoke," was the parting injunction from the Bench.
