AUSTRALIAN INCIDENT EXPLAINED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyriffht (Itco. September 29, 8.15 p.m.) Melbourne, September 29. In connection with the protest mado by French residents of Sydney, to the French Consul, against the action of Mr. P. M. Glynn (Federal Minister for External Affairs) in allowing, without protest, insulting references to be made to the French flag by. a member of a deputation of Presbyterian missionaries which waited upon the Minister in reference to the Now Hebrides question, Mr. Glynn states that the consul lias voiced a complaint in Support of the protest. The Minister adds that in nis reply to the deputation, he had called attention to the high, chivalrous bearing of the French, with a view to showing that he had no sympathy with any attempt to impugn the status or the honour of people who were entitled to the same resp.ect as the British. Tile Departmental report of the missionaries' deputation had beon shown to the consul, who expressed himself as being satisfied with the tono assumed by him (Mr. Glynn) when replying to the deputation. Mr. Glynn adds: "I could not projudge the case on the statements m'ade by the deputation, or accept any comments derogatory to the honour of the French people."
