STRENUOUS POLITICS IN TENNESSEE.
QUORUM KEPT BY FORCE OF , ARMS. By Teleeraph—Press Association—Copyright "Times"—Sydney "Sun" Speoial Cables. New York, September 28. The Governor of Tennessee (Mr. Hooper) is trying to force two Bills against- the liquor trado through the Legislature. Opponents of the Bill have so far thwarted the move by absenting themselves from the Houso, thus preventing a quorum. The Governor has now stationed in the House armed warders from the prisons to keep members in their places. Tlio Mayor of Nashville has sent police to see that the members are not coerced. The Opposition have made obstructive speeches and waved revolvers.
A few days ago a cnblo iniessago from Nasbvillo stated:—The Speaker (Mr. Stanton) of the Lower House of tho Tennesson Legislature alleged that the Governor (Mr. Hooper) had dispatched two cases of revolvers to tho offices of the Capitol superintendent, with instructions that they wero to be used to intimidate Mr. Stanton. One representative (Mr. JJacfarlane) nemoved his coat in order, to show that ho was unarmed. Other representatives followed suit. A lively scene occurred, and there wa9 much uproar. Finally, a motion to investigate the trufh of the Speaker's statement was defeated. There is much illfeeling between parties as tho Tesult of the prohibition campaign.
