OF 1889 AND 1913. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrieht London, September 22. A light cruiser of the new programmo will be named the Calliope. The Admiralty thus recalls the feat of the old Calliope at Apia some years ago. On March 15 and 16, 1889, there was a great storm at Apia. Thrco Gorman and threo American war vessels were driven ashore on tho island of TJpolu, and destroyed. About 50 Americans and 9G Germans were drowned. H.M.S. Calliopo was the only warship egred. Using Westport coal, she steamed out in the teeth of tho gale. Captain Kane, wlio commanded her, was thanked by the Admiralty for his skill and seamanship.
