SOCIAL RE-UNION.
PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS
The professional musicians of the city held their first "social" of their seventh year at Godber's rooms, Cuba Street, last night, and the event' proved an even greater success than tli'oso which had preceded it, excellent items being contributed b,v: Mr. Hamilton Hodges 1 , Miss Gladys Watkins, Miss May Donaldson, Mr. St. George, and Mr! Frank R. Johiiston (secretary).
Mr. Watkins, who presided, said that tho past year was memorable as one of change, they having lost three of their most prominent members, Mr. Maughan Barnett, their first president, who was now at Auckland; Sir. Hunt, their first secretory and. president for part of last year, who had gone to Europe; and Miss Beatrice Richmond, a member of the council, whose death they all greatly deplored, and in whose memory it was suggested that an annual prize should be offered' for composition open to all New Zealandcrs of 21 years and under. They had secured a room in Messrs'. Begg s warehouse for their council meetings) and • there members could meet for conversation,, reading, or writing. Tho council would meet shortly to draw up a syllabus for the year, and with all the ..talent now at their disposal he thought they would have 110 difficulty in providing a programme of reunions which would prove both entertaining and. instructive to all the members. One feature of musical life in tho Dominion which had exercised tho minds of tlio council in the past had been tho question of singiijg in our day schools, and though the matter was not finally settled a decided change for tho better was pending.
