LORD RENOWN WINS CHIEF RACE
Although yesterday was not a general holiday, a largo crowd of city sporting people -made tho trip to Otaki for tho opening day of tho Maori, Racing Club's spring meeting, and, as visitors from ether parts also mustered in force, tho attendaiico was all that tho club could havo desired. Tho weather remained lino and tho day's Bport proved thoroughly enjoyablo from the spectators' point of view. Big fields lined lip in tho majority of tho events and naturally backers experienced something moro. .than tho usual -difficulty in selecting winners. Only ono actual favourite was successful and, in two cases at least, tho winners were rank outsidors. ' Tho principal ovent, the Dominion Day Handicap, resulted in victory for Lord Renown, who easily defeated tho ten candidates opposed to him. What appeared to bo a serious accident occurred in the Maiden Plato when ono of tho riders was unseated in tho centre of tho big field of galloping horses. Ho was badly shaken and bruised, but had a remarkable escape from worse injuries. As has been the caso at most raco meetings during tho past two years, the totalisator investments showed a substantial increase as compared with thoso for tho corresponding day last year. Altogether an amount of £13,84.4 was handled at the windows yesterday, whereas on tlio first day of tho last spring meeting the total was only £11,252. Results of yesterday's races aro as follow:—

Paremata and Rongomau made the early runnipg from Kill, who was a couple of lengths behind the other pair as they passed the milo post. Half a milo from home Pareinata was beaten and Rill set out to overhaul Rongomau. 'A fino raco to the post saw Rill win by tho narrowest margin from Rongomau, with Himatangi a poor third. Beforo half tho distance had been covered Huia drew alongside Ariatiatia, and the pair raced neck and neck until within a furlong of the post. Thoro Huia had tho measuro of his opponent, and going on ho won by a bare length) Commotion being a length behind Ariatiatia. Timo, Imm. 45 l-sscc.

As soon as the tapes were released, Peroneals colours wero prominent, whilo thoso of Lord Renown and Stepney were also to be seen. When tho field settled down Stepney took up tho running from Lord Renown and Peroneal, while Roosevelt and Ceylon wero toiling in the .rear. Half a milo from home Lord Renown took charge, and, going on full of running, won by nearly ten lengths from Brown Trout, who was clear of Mulga Bill. Stepney was f<urth, Mira fifth and Peroneal sixth. Time, 2min. 10 l-sscc.
