NOTES ON THE RACING.
Silver Monarch's withdrawal from tho First Hurdles left a field of sovon to contest tho event. Rill, with W. Young in tho saddle, was tho popular fancy, and ntoro than half tho money on tho machine was invested on her. She duly pulled her baekcrs through, but her win was only achieved by tlie narrowest of margins. Rangomau and Paremata mado tho early running, and O'Connell, on tiho former, secured a break of three or four lengths at tho back of tho course. Rill had to bo ridden right out to'reduce this "ap, and sho Just mauaged to head Iton go man on tlio post.
Only live liorses went to the post for the To Hiwi Momorial Stakes, for which Yankee Doodle was mado a slightly better favourite than Ariatiatia. Somo delay was caused at the start through Huia breaking through the tapes, but eventually a good start was effected, Ariatiatia and Huia had the race to themselves the u'holo way, tho latter winning quite comfortably at the finish and returning his backers a surprisingly good dividend.
For tho Maiden Flat Race tliero wero seventeen starters, and it required some minutes to get them away. Eventually Mystified was left ,at tho post. . Waldemar and Iliad's Hero werei in the leading division from tho barrier rise, and none of tho others had a chanco with t'hem. Hansard, who did not get away very well, finished strongly, but had to bo content with third position ' H. Telford, rider of Hansard, was fined £1 for wearing incorrect colours (cap), and was also fined £5 at tho barrier. A. Simpkins, rider of Grandson, -was unseated, after going a couple of furlongs. Ho was carried in on a stretcher, but fortunately escaped serious injury. He was, howover, badly shaken, and was unable to take any other mount during tho afternoon.
Roosevelt was favourite in the Dominion Day Handicap, but ho scumbled badly on leaving the barrier, and thus spoiled his chances. ■' Ceylon, another well-fancied candidate, burst a blood vessel during {lie race, and liad to bo pulled up. Tho raco proved tho best of things for Lord Renown, who vent to the front half a mile from homo, and won very easily by nearly ten lengths. Both winner and second liorso returned their supporters handsome dividends, and Mulga Bill, who finished in third place, was also an outsider.
Sir Moseley, Courtley, and Powder Fox wero withdrawn from tho Stewards _ Hack Handicap. Pavlova, Secret Link,' an'd Achilledcs wero in niost' : demand with backers, and they filled the places, though tho actual favourite, Pavlova, occupied second position behind Secret Link, who led from start to finish. Both the winner and tho second horse wore bred at the Waikanao Stud, where also another of tho day's winners (Iliad's Hero) was bred. Mention of the latter recalls that his dam, Kitchenmaid, was sold to an Australian owner last season.
Gold Crest and Leapuki were the only 6cratcliings for tho Flying Handicap, for which Immor was mado a very strong favourite. A great surprise was in store for backers, for Mount Victoria (who was tho absolute outsider of the field) scored an easy . victory. The Trentham-trnined horso. rejoined the activo brigade only a few weeks ago, and cortainly did not look ready to win a race. He had, however, been responsible for a very smart gallop over a few furlongs, and this caused a few fortunate investors to favour his chances.
Another outsider scored in the last race. This was Glenlivet, who proved toe good for tho better-backed candidates, Gasjette and At the start of this race Yankee Doodle caused somo trouble, and, finally, when tho barrier was released Chillies was badly loft, and had to gMlon behind the field the whole way. Glenlivet is trained by FJ Higgott, who had sent out another winner (Huia) earlier in tho day. M. M'Donnkl rode both tho houses n.mied. Another jockey who scored a doublo success during tho day was A. Reid. Ho was associated with the victories of Lord Renown and Mount Victoria.
