RATINC ON SPORTS GROUNDS.
Sir,—His Worship the Mayor is reported'in this morning's \Dominion to have stated "that formally the Reserves Committee of the council rr.ade all arrangements to buy the Athletic Park, and tlio Rugby Union went in behind tli© committee and secured the ground." This statement was adhered to "by the Mayor after an interjection by Councillor Fletcher. As a member of the Rugby Union at the time of the purchase of the park from the Athletic Park Company, I desire to say that the Mayor's statement is contrary to fact. As far aB I am aware the council.never approaclied the Park Company or the Wellington Union during the negotiations with a view of direct purchase. Tlio purchase by the Wellington Union was made in a straight-out business manner, the City Council being given a certain preference should tlio Wellington Union desire to sell at any timo. Tlio Mayor's statement is a reflection on tho Rugby Union, and should be proved or withdrawn.—l am, etc.. P JOHN BURNS. Karori, September 19, 1913.
