AUCKLAND'S WINTER.
VERY LITTLE DISTRESS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, September 20. There was not much distress in Auckland, during the winter, taking the of _ the Salvation Army Shelter as a criterion. It is true that the building, which contains about-100 beds at prices ranging from 4d. to Is., was generally lull up, and sometimes men had to bo turned l away, but there were feiv requests for free beds. As a matter of fact, there have been more requests for free beds last month and this month than during the winter months proper. Just now thero are eight or nine men nightly who cannot afford the few penco charged for sleeping accommodation.' This 'bears out the records of previous years. On an average 80 or 90 of the beds are now occupied nightly.
