NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glencoe.] In connection with the Otaki Racing Club's meeting, to bo held to-day and to-morrow, special railway arrangements are advertised. Trains will leave Thomdou station for Otaki at 7.10 a.m. and 8.20 a.m., and exoursion faros will obtain. Tho trip to and from Otaki can bo conveniently made in the one day, and the racecourse is now within easy walking distance of the railway station. Good fields ore tho order of the day, but quality is lacking. Howover, there is every indication of a good day's sport.

Proceedings will open with the_ Hack Hurdles, in which Rill holds pride of •place, and Mr. M'Manaway's mare is sure to start favourite. Good reports are to hand concerning Fagot, Who hails from F. Porter's Gisborn© stables.

Commotion and Huia will 1 divide the machine honours in tho mile hack race; The former is a good solid horse in welter company, but if Huia bears a well-trained appearanoe ho may be found in premier position on the midline. Patronymic has winning form over a mile, but so far Aratiatia has only been successful' up to five furlongs. A very big field is sure to go to the post .ill tho Maiden Plate, five furlongs. The locally-owned Waldemar Is the best known of tho field, and his Danneyirke form was good. Still, every tiling depends upon the draw for positions, and any likely-looking horse that draws a good position will do- well backed.

Mira has not been up long, and may not bo at his best in the Dominion Day Handicap, but t is'^reported'to be very well. 'Recent'form points 'to Roosevelt, who fairly bolted away with the big handicap at Dannevirke. The critics vote this race' very open, and one of the light-weights may provide a surprise.

Fifteen runners are carded for the Stewards' Hack, six furlongs. Tho con-' nections of Lady Louisa regard hor as unbeatable, and a like estimate is held of Secret Link, who is reported to have finished in front of Mira in a seyenfurlongs gallop. Achilledoo has his Riccarton form to recommend him, and appears to bo well treated. Pavlova and Courtley are both fast, and underneath them in the handicap are two winners in Sir Moselpy and Shona May. As in the Maiden race, the draw for positions will play an important part in tho final issue. >.

Immer will bo the favourite in the Flying Handicap, but Styx, Lady Georgia, and Perceler can go very fast, and may trouble tho TrentTianx filly. Parewanui, on the minimum, will have a host of supporters, as his track work of lato has been vory good..

They are a very oven lot in tho Welter Hack, and the winner may take a lot of finding.

Jockey E. Lowe, who has been riding in Melbourne and Adelaide for some mdnths past, is returning to the Dominion, and arrives by tho Ulimaroa on Wednesday next.

Slioukl a sufficient number of passengers be available, the Railway Department lias agreed to put a carriage on tho goods train, which leaves Palmerston North on arrival of the Wanganui train next Saturday evening. Tliis will bo a great boon to Wellington sportsmen, who can see the whole of the racing at WaTigamii and reach home about midnight the same evening. M. Hobbs arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, and goes on to Wanganui this morning. He has with him the three-year-olds, Mowbray and Rinaldo, and also a two-year-old for the Hastings Stakes. Jockeys Sj Reid, J l . E. Jones, and R. Berry camc up from Lyttelton yesterday, and will be riding at Otaki and Wanganui this week. W. Ryan and L. Nodder are also in town on a visit to tho Turkish Baths.

Thoso who profess to know state that Bon Ton will not be raced at

Wanganui, but that R. O'Donnell will como north with Bon Revo and Prelusive for tho Hawko's Bay meeting next weok.

Supporters of Soltano for tho A.J.C. Derby will now bo on excellent terms with themselves,, and if the Soult colt can stay (his trainer says ho ha 9 no doubts on this point) ho should give a great account of himself 011 October 4.

"When H. Hicltey topic Whakaweira to Sydney, many were inclined to doubt the wisdom of his action, but tho win of tho old golding at Roseliill shows that he still retains Ms form. Possibly he may pick v.p another Tace oither in Sydney or Melbourne.
