colm "that he do leave the chair until 10 a.m." The suggestion, which was the outcnl.e of an arrangement among the leaders of tlio rival parties, was favourably received bv the Committee, and Jlr. Malcolm left the chair. When, the Committee resumed at 10 a.m. yesterday, the last item on tlio Mental Hospitals Estimates —Homo for Infectives, £1118—was passed without discussion. A RETURN TO NORMAL. • COMPLAINTS ABOUT A SANATORIUM. On the class: Tourist and Health Resorts, £'17,0G0, • . Mr. G. W. Forbes (Huninui) moved to reduce the item, Genoral Manager, £520, b.v £10, stating that he did so iu order to draw attontion to tlio state of things at Hanmer. Ho had: received the following telegram from a. Hanmer resident '■ — I 'Are you awa-ro baths and tea-rooms' only open 9 to 5.30? One sot attendants; large number visitors; sanatorium patients waiting; no doctor; uo one in charge with any authority tourist manager, neglect shameful." Mr. Forbes said that the usual argument'was that Hanmer did not. pay, and that the Government suffered a loss in keeping it going. It was not to be expected that a business would bo remunerative if it were neglected, as the establishment at Hanmer was.
