GOLD AT TERAWHITI.
THE LEASES INSPECTED. On Sunday last Messrs. F. E. Petherick and Hislop,. two of the directors of tho. Terawhiti .Dykes, Ltd., visited the property comprising leases at Terawhiti, and found that the lodes on tho south side of Yankee Gully showed signs oi further development, and that the sand was'assaying better than before. A four feet reef had opened to five feet, tho new portion, being richer than the old. A sample was dotted out of the best , portion and gavo (thoy state) a large showing of freo gold, estimated at about £20 per ton. Tho big lodo was reported as having improved in value, and the promoters believe that ' both will grow richer as thoy get nearer the top of tho -hill. An expert mining engineer had (they stated) paid a visit to the leases and had found that thero was sufficient water to provide power to work the claims. A number of other lodes had also boon proved to contain gold, and tho directors wero satisfied (said' Mr. Petherick) that thoy have good property. Mr. Petherick went on to 'say that previous attempts to work tho field, have proved unsuccessful owing to tho naturo of tho material in which the gold had been found not being understood, and prospectors' energies, being devoted to finding quartz, notwithstanding that tho Geological Department's report showed that tho gold bearing ground was what was then oalled "mullocky" sandstone, and now known as diorite. That gold is contained in these idiorite claims, has (concluded Mr. Petherick), been sufficiently proved.
