OPINION OF CARLYLE CITED,

Dunedln, September 16. On Sunday night at Lawrence the Rev. R. "Wood spoko on tho Bible-in-schoola to a largo gathering of various denominations. Ho referred to tho bogy of conscience, and of the imaginery Atheistic teacher raised by foes 'of tho reform, and ho asked if it was in accordanco with liberty that tho individual conscience should coerce tho ponscienco of tho' nation. Mr. Wood referred to Sir Henry Parkes as tho man who, in New South Wales, had framed a system of education in which a compromise on religion had ended denominational schools, and his efforts had evoked praise from the leading thinkers of Britain, such as W. E. Forster, Thomas Carlyle, and others. Mr. Wood said somo few people in tho press and on the platform were croaking "111 dope! _ 111 done I" With regard to education in Now South Wales but, from Thomas Carlyle, the system called forth ' unqualified' eulogy for ho thus wrote to Henry Parkes in 1870: "I can congratulate you on having laid down a plan, judicious, clear, and impartial, and probably tho only sound plan practicable in your colony, wliich plan is vigorously practised there, and will bo a blessing to millions and millions of your colonial countrymen, and indeed more or less a benefit to all men after wo aro gone. Well donol Well done!"
