MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD.
— 1 MOVE IMPENDING. • As tho Arbitration Court award between the officers of the coastal fleet and the owners expires on October 1 this year, the Merchant Service Guild ia moving in tho direction of a new award. Certain draft proposals, affecting pay and overtime of captains pnd mates of tho small steamers, have been submitted to the executive committee of the Wellington branch- of the Shipowneis' Federation, and it is understood that theso proposals will be discussed at a general meeting which is to bo hold shortly. From what could bo gathered yesterday, it appears that seamen tmployed on some of the steamers mentioned in tho award have earned salaries much in excess of those earned by their captains and officors. This has been mado possible on account of tho crew having beon paid overtime. ' It is stated that the question of overtime will be ono of the most important points raised .in the coming conference between tho guild and tho employers. As tho present award lasts till the parties concerned apply to tho Court for a now one, it will be some little timo before the matter is . settled.
