EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS.
THE FERRY SERVICE. A moeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last ovening. Tho Mayor, Mr. W. J. Organ, presided, and there wore also present Councillors Ross, Russell, Harcourt, and Foley. Tho Mayor Tead an interim report from tho Ferry Board, which stated that tho board took charge of the service ton days ago, and had sat every day since, but had not had timo to draw up a. proper report. Tho board has not been ablo to come to a decision regarding tho' appointment of a manager, but it is hoped to make an announcement within a fortnight._ Meanwhilo the board has been assisted in the conduct of its affairs by Captain Cameron, who has been appointed senior captain. The time-table has been altered as far as possible to suit the convenience of residents. In taking over tho ferry 1 ' boats, without taking over tho office staff of tlio Ferry Company, the work has been thrown very heavily on the 'shoulders of tho board. It was found very 1 difficult at tho start, but matters aro now running smoothly. As far as returns are concerned; 'tho Mayor had only to roport that from the date of taking over tho sorvico, until September 10, tho receipts had amounted to £210. The expenditure for tho samo period had been £110. Theso are tho actual cash takings and tlio amount includos the issue of several soason tickets. The Mayor Baid tho sorvice promised well, and so far ho considered that everything had been working satisfactorily. Ho hoped to be ablo to bring down a full report at tho next meeting. Councillor Harcourt asked why the time-table had been altered, when it had beon previously decided -clot to do so. The Mayor replied that previously the board had not had time to consider the time-table, but afterwards it was deemed that special circumstances justified the board in taking this action. The police reported that they had been unable to traco the offenders who had wilfully uprooted certain, trees which had been planted in the borough on Arbor Day. •
