THE BIRTH OF THE THEATRE ROYAL.
Sir, —Mr. J. M'Dowell's picture of the birth of tho Thentro Royal will not appeal to tho moderates who wore there. Tho Theatre Royal, if held back, was so held back by reason of insufficient call. Tho "unco giiicl" had nothing to do with it. My first remembrance of tho building is as a block-houso in a wilderness, or to use another simile, nn oasis in a desert of now clay. As to tho population, it extended from the Duko of Edinburgh to the Princess. Lastly, tho class of play might well bo a hundredfold cruder than the worst in Shakespeare's time. Tho theatre was superseded just as soon as playing north tho name at all supervened. It lias been tho fifth wheel of a coach all tho time and no tears need minglo with its obsequies.—l am, etc., HENRY BODLEY. September 9, 1913.
