OPERATIONS ON S.S. DEVON.
GOING'ON SMOOTHLY. Salvage. operations on the Devon aro proceeding satisfactorily. A. gang of men were engaged yesterday m getting submerged cargo from the holds on deck. The- quantity raised included eight Ford motor-cars, 20 tons of galvanised piping, and between 20 and3o cases of harvesting machinery. The Echo if ill be takon down to the Devon to-day to lift this cargo, provided tlie weather is favourable. Nine of the officors and. crow of the Devon have been given positions on tho Kumara and Wcstmeatn, and will proceed Homo in these vessels. If other members of tho crew cannot obtain employment tiiey will bo sent to London by the Rotorua, which leaves Wellington on September 18. Captain- G. Ch Smith, Sjpermtendent of Mercantile Marino, has consented to become a trustee of tho. funds that are being raised for tho Telief of tho crew. An entertainment is to be given at the Theatre Royal (by permission of Mr. John Fuller) on, Friday, evening, in, aid, of the crew and their dependents in tho Old Country.
