IGNORED AT A FUNCTION.
—, —s —. — COUNCILLOR'S INDIGNATION. (By Telßirraph'-Bi)«cial OorresnonfleatJ Auckland, September 5. What ia called an "interlude" occurred at the meeting of the City Council last evening. When tlic Mayor asked if members had any ordinarv business to brine forward, Mr. - J. C. Gleeson rose to speak, and it was vary obvious that lie was labouring under considerable emotion. "What is the meaning of a civic reception?" lie asked. Ho wont oil to say that councillors had been invited to attend the reception ta the British Parliamentary party, but it seemed to him that when councillors turned up to a reception of this kind they were invariably turned down by being left outside in the ante-room. Ho was proceeding to characterise the recent reception as the "most beautiful deaf and dumb show he had attended," when the Mavor called him to ordor, with a request that he should use language more, befitting the precincts of the Council Chamber. "Wo wero treated on that oocasioii," proceedod Mr. Gleeson, "as a lot of nincompoops." Ho added that if tho councillors woro invited to a civic reception they should not bo taken into an anteroom and left there. Rather than be ignored thev would much prefer to take their seats 'with the general public. _ Tho Mayor: This is not ordinary business. Mr. Gleeson was proceeding to make further remarks when he was . again interrupted by Mr. Parr. "Kindly accept my rilling," said the Mayor. "I don't know," lie added, "what tho nature of Councillor Gleeson's griovance is. There is, however, an inquiry to be mado into tho organisation of the town clerk's office, when- Mr. Gleeson will haVe an opportunity of making any complaint that he desires." Finally, after a further passage, Mr. Gleeson said that lie would apologise if he had ovorstepped tho bounds of ordinary discipline, but he felt strongly on tho matter.
