RUGBY CODE. ARRIVAL OF N.S. WALES TEAM. Mombers of tho New South Wales Rugby team arrived' ,hero from New Plymouth last night, and wero received at the Thorndon Station bv members of tho committees of tho New Zealand Rugby Union and tho Wellington Union. Tho team wore tho guests of tho Oriental Football Club at a danco given in tho Town Hall last evening. At 12.30 p.m. to-day tho team will bo officially welcomed by tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) at the Town Hall. AUCKLAND BEAT TARANAKI. (By Telegraph—Pres3 Association,) New Plymouth, September 4. iAuekltuid defeated Taranalci to-dav in itfeal weather by 11 points to 8. The game was fast and open. In tho first spell O'Leary kicked a penalty goal for Auoldand, and M'Gregor scorod a try, which O'Leary failed! to oonvert. After last Saturday g somewhat poor display . on the part of Taranaki, fow followers of tho game gave them a chance in tlllis match, but, truo to their reputation for iuoorosistenoy, Taranaki acquitted thomselves with distinction, and almost succeeded. The Taraiiala forwards as usual hold, their own, just as strongly in the last quarter of an hour as at the commencement. The Taratiabi backs, however, suffered 1 , by comparison with tlie Anfcklanders. TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS. The past and present students of the Wellington, [Training College met on Tuesday on Itelbumo Park for their annual football match. The game Resulted in a win for past students by 29 points to 13. Mr. !?. K. Lomaa was tho referee. : ' POSITION AS COACH. James Wylio, a Rotorua footballer, has accepted a two years' engagement as football coach to tho American University (California). He' will leave for S'an Francisco by the Willochra on Friday next.
