SPRING FLOWERS.

THE HUTT SOCIETY'S SHOW. ' Ono. of the finest spring shows that has over been held by tho Hutt Valley Horticultural Society was opened iu tho Town Hall, Lower Hutt, yesterday afternoon by his Excellency tho Governor. The number of entries and their quality has never been surpassed, anfl the interior of tho large hall, with its white walls and decorative trellis work, formed an admirable background for the wealth of blooms which were displayed. The centre of the hall was occupied by stands of floworing pot plants, exhibited by F. Cooper, Ltd., and T. Waugh, of Lower Hutt. Tho former was exceedingly fine, ahd included a large range of cinerarias, anemones, cyclamen, hyacinths, and somo magnificent specimens of amaryllis. Mr. Waugh's collection, which was also very fine, was principally of spring flowers and foliage plants, and it included over' a hundred varieties of narcissi alone. Mr. P. Graham's exhibition of cyclamen elicited much admiration. Every variety , of colour was to bo seen among them, and not' only wore they remarkable for their shading, but they were of unusual sine. ' In addition to liis cyclamen were somo very special hybrid freesias raised by himself, and some wonderful carnation blooms. This stand was quite tho most noteworthy feature of the show. An excellent display of pot plants, in which palms and. aspidistra predominated, was made by Mr. H., Poolo, and from tho Bellcvuo Gardens came a collection of cut flowers, ! in which rhododendrons and anemones largely predominated. Mr. F. Cooper had another stand given over entirely to narcissi. Many exhibits were sent in by Messrs. Gibson, of Kaponga; Mr. Alfred Booth, of Carterton; Mr. Kirkor, of Auckland; and Messrs. Hobbs and Westbury, of Lower Hutt. For the decorated tables class thero wero about twenty entries, and an unusual amount of artistic tasto had boon displayed in their arrangement. Mr. T. Waugh was the judge of tho flower sections, and Miss Patricia Hardy of the decorative classes. , PRIZE LIST. In the open class, A. Booth was awarded the trophy of £2 2s>. for his collection of narcissi, A. J. Hobbs scouring the'second prize, a trophy valued at £1 Is. In the. various, sections for collections of daffodils in tho open class, F. Westbury sccurecE 5 firsts and 3 second's; A. J. Hobbs, 3 firsts and 1 I seconds; A. Booth, 3 firsts and 1 second; H. Poole, 1 first and' 3 seconds; A. Macnulkn, 1 second l . For litis collection of 6 varieties of trumpet daffodil®, A. J. Hobbs secured 1 first prize, and F. Westbury second. Mr. R. Gibson was awarded a special l prize for the champion short trumpot daffodil of the show. It was called "Gannet," and had white wings with a_ yellow cup. In tho open class for various flowers, H. Poole scoured 5 firsts; F. Westbury, 2 seconds. Mi ; ss G. Jenness, A. M'Millan. R. Wilson, and A. Booth were awarded firsts, and' H. S. Pearce a second. Tho cliallengo silver vaso (the Bnrr trophy, valuo 10 guineas), for collection of narcissi, was awarded to A. J. Hobbs, with R. Gibson, second. In the nurserymen's class an R.H.S. silver medal was awarded to F. Cooper, Ltd., and a bronze medal to H. Poole. AMATEUR CLASS. Collection, of narcissi, not exceeding 30 varieties, W. H.
