TENNIS ON TOWN BELT.
3 COUNCIL'S GRANT. ON PIRIE STREET RESERVE. Ln all probability lawn tennis will bo flayed on the Moamt Victoria portion of tlio Town. Bolt before very long. Tho leasing of portion of the belt for t.tes purpose was decided upon by tho City .Council last night, when tho Reserves Committee recommended as follows :— "That a lea'se of a portion of tho Pirio Street Reserve bo granted to to the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. The main points in the lease arc: —Term, 21 years; rent, to bo fixed by tlio City Valuer; oonstruotioiu, tlio first t'hreo courts aro to be constructed within tho first twelve months from the dato of signing the lease, and the remaining six are to l>e formed at the rato of two per annum." Councillor Frost explained, ,iii answer to a question by Councillor Fletcher, that when the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association had got their portion of the ground, there would still bo from six to eight acres loft for children's playing ground. Councillor Fletcher then intimated that ho would agree to tlio committee's recommendation on the understanding that tho work of forming tlio children's playing ground' was proceeded 1 with. It wa>s badly needed. Councillor Tregear moved: as an amendment that tbo recommendation be - referred back to the committee. He objected to the control of tho people's property being placed in private hands. Councillor Atkinson, (in seconding tlio amendment, took exception to some of j tho terms of tho proposed lease. a After brief discussion, tlio amendment was lost and tho recommendation 0 f tlio ' committee was agreed to oil tho voices. Councillors Frost and Buddlo wero ' appointed a committee to consider tho terms of the lease with the City Solicitor.
