ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
o NARROW ESCAPE. - CITY CAR & INVALID'S CHAIR. An old man named Wm. Gray, a bootmaker by, occupation, and residing in Adelaide Road, liad a. narrow escape from serious accident in Manners Street at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. Gray, who is an invalid, was propelling himself along in a bath chair, and whilst endeavouring to pass a stationary cart, ho came into violent collision with tramcar No. 55. Both tlie tram and 'the man were proceeding along Manners Street, ill the . direction of "Willis Street, and tho collision occurred outside t'he New Theatre. Tho olj wheel of tho chriir was badly bent, and tho old man was' thrown oil the roadway. According to the motormail in charge of the car, tlio man did not take ,any notice of his persistent gouging, and it all happened very suddenly, and the old man had swerved out to pass tlie cart j)isfc as the tram came up. Luckily, he escaped 1 uninjured. IDENTIFICATIONDIFFICULT. Identity of t'he man wJio died suddenly in Tory Street on Wednesday morning has not yet been established. A pawn ticket found in his pocket gave the name of Booth. An inquest will bo held this morning. INJURED IN A FIGHT. The fireman Louis Anderson, who was injured in a fight' on tho steamer Kumara on Wednesday night,' is (according to tho Hospital authorities) not in serious condition. . TIMELY RESCUE. '• A seaman named Thomas Stacev, employed on tho Tysor liner Indralema, had a narrow escape from drowning about 8 p.m. yesterday. It appears that lie was making his way towards tho ship, which is berthed at tho King's Wharf, and when ho was in the vicinity of tlie Railway Wharf he fell into the water. A wharf labourer named-N. Burns immediately jumped in and kept him up . till W. Jarvis, quartermaster of tho Indralema, came to his assistance. RAILWAY ACCIDENT AT HUTT." Last night, whilstl Robert Arkwright was engaged shunting at Lower Hutt, ho | fell off ono of tho cars and received;, severe injuries, including a. compound fracture of the left leg below tho kneo, a severe laceration in the side, and a cut over tlie nose. He was brought by special train to Wellington, and removed to the Hospital. — !
