9 — : losterday afternoon tlic "Grand Mercantile Marino.Fair," organised follies boneiit of the Seamen's Mission, vas opened in the Mission Hall by heir Excellencies the Governor and lie Countess of Liverpool. The buildng had been decorated with quantities if flags, and the interior presented a erv different appearance from its isual aspect-, numbers of elaborately leoorated stalls, laden with most' atractive displays of goods, having been 'anged all round tho room. Tho 3isiiop of Wellington, Dr. Sprott, introduced his Excellency and tho Countess of Liverpool to a large gathering )f people, and spoke of tho valuablo vork which was accomplished among ieafaring folk by means of the Seamen's Mission. A louquet of beautiful yellow flowers was iresentcd to her Excellency by one of ho- children present. A very oujoyiblp musical programme had been arranged by Mrs. I'. M. B. Fisher. Tho ipening niunber was a quartet, taken >_art in by Miss Gladys Watkins, Miss iileen Uriscoll, Mr. Allwright, and Mr. H. N. Fletcher. Songs were also ioiitributcd by Mrs. P. M. B. Fisher, Miss Watkins, Miss Uriscoll, Mr. H. N. Fletcher, and Mr. J). Kenny, and Miss May Donaldson played a violin solo. L'ho Sailors' .Hornpipe, which was lanced by the Aniokura boys, was a ;reatly-appreciated item, aiid so was tho nareli performed by a number of child■en in fancy dress. The organisers of .ho fair had succeeded in gathering in in excellent collection of goods of all descriptions, and among them whs to be seen a very interesting display of Dhineso art work and silverware. P. Powles; lion, treasurer, Mr. G. W, Barltrop, Dr. Pollen, Messrs. J. W. Marchnnt, J, A. Tripe, F. W. Rutherford, and tho misskmer, Mr.' W. E. Codes. The Amolnirn. Iroys formed the guard of honour ,to tlieir Excellencies the Governor and tho Countess of Liverpool upon their arrival at tho Seamen'? Institute. The fair will he continucc for the remainder of tho week, and this afternoon Mrs. E. Coleridge will pel'; form tho opening ceremony.
