HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(, : At a public meeting hold last evening ill the l'etonc Council Chambers it was decided to form a Co-operative Building Society, to be called "Tho No. 3 Co-operativo Building Society." Mr. 11. Damant was appointed secretary pro torn. Messrs. M'Donald,,Bnrridgo, Anderson, Jenkins, and Watson were appointed a committee to draw up rules and submit same to a future meeting. Seventeen motorists are to appear at Hutt Court tc-day on charges of exceeding the speed limit 011 tho last two race days. Three young men will also appear to answer a charge of damaging a billiard tabic, the property of Mr.
Geo. Sykes. The last of a number of social evenings in connection with St. David's Literary and Debating Club was held last evening. The Rev. A. Thompson was in the chair. Tho-following contributed to tho programme:—Messrs. Armstrong, Thompson, Burd, tho Misses Abbot, and Bcrryman. fJanics and competitions were also indulged in. On Monday evening tho-Upper Hutt Town Board will meet to prepare bylaws in connection with the water scheme which is at present being installed there. It will also be decided whether residents outside the district are to bo supplied with water from the mains. - At tho Petono Police. Court- yesterday, beforo Messrs. A. Coles and J'. Piper, J.P.'s, John Maroney, who was charged with disorderly conduct whilst inebriated, was fined 10s. For using certain language in Jackson Street- he was fined £'o, and for resisting the police a fine of £1 was imposed. The Lyceum Theatre was crowded last night, the occasion being tlio "Hard-up'' plain find fancy dress bnll. A meeting of the Hutt Park Committee was held at Petono last evening. Mr. Baldwin was chairman, and other members present wore Messrs. Hodgins, Brocklcbank, and Hobbs. The Wellington Hockey Association forwarded a cheque for £21 for three grounds for the season, and also intimated that tho association would not require tho grounds after tho present season. It was decided to authorise the chairman and secretary to draft a reply to tho effect that great expenso had been involved in preparing grounds and that the committee intended to hold the association to the terms of the lease. The Lower Hutt-branch of the Bank of New Zealand wrote intimating that the committee's account had been transferred to Petono.-^ —Received. The Lower, Hutt Council intimated that it had approached the Petono Council on the question of taking steps to obtain legislation to allow the training of horses on the park, and that both councils were agreed on.the matter. It was decided t6 reply stating that the committee intended to take steps with this obicct in view.
