HOTEL HARPIES.

STRONG WARNING FROM POLICE.

At the quarterly meeting of tho Licensing Committee yesterday, strong comment was niado by Superintendent Ellison as to tho presence of certain, women on licensed premises, particularly tho lioyal Tiger Motel and tho Cricketers' Arms Hotel. 1

Tlio superintendent told the committee that lio I'.ad notified tho licensees of tlio two 'hotels in question tliat it was his intention to mention that matter to tho committee that day. so thai,, if they desired, tlioy would have thj opportunity of attending. Tho licensees (added Mr. Ellison) of botli thoso houses could not expect any hut a-bad report' if they persisted in fostering and encouraging tho class of women that he had referred to. If either licensee mada an. application for tho license of an' hotel at tho present time, tho police would oppose it. Women had the satno right as men to obtain a drink at a hotel, so long as tlioy remained on tho premises only a reasonable time for its consumption. If ovidenco were forthcoming (as was tho ease at the Magistrate's Court last Friday) regarding woine.ii of a low typo frequenting a hotel morning, afternoon, and evening, and at all times, it would bo clear that tho hotel was being badly conducted. "If a' strange young man fell in with thoso hotel harpies," continued Sir. Ellison, "he would bo in need of a yourig man's protection society, and any hotel that fostors such a trade as was 'disclosed 1 in this Court last Friday will not got anything but an unfavourable report." The chairman (Dr. M'Arthur, S.M.) :■ Tlio oonmiittoo desiro 1110 to say that tlioy will support you in every respect. The following transfers were granted: —Now Zealander Hotel, from H. D. Dodson to J. 11. Hiiiton (Mr. Levvy); National Hotel, froai H. F. Cameron to' F. Hilton (Mr. Tripe): and Caledonian Hotel, from W. J. Jorgeiisoii to D. Sullivan (Mr. J. J. M'Grath)r\ ;
