DEMAND FOR EMPLOYMENT. Thero does not secra to bo any greaS demand for employment on public works at tlio present time. Some weeks ago the Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Public Works) stated yesterday employment was found by his Department for about two hundred men, most of whom applied through the Labour Department, but since that time thero had been no exceptional demand for employment.' From time to time, Minister added. a report came in to tho effect that a largo number of men were out of work somewhere, but in every case these reports had proved, upon investigation, to bo cither without foundation or greatly exaggerated. In one instance a story came up from the West Coaiit that something liko one hundred men wero out of wgrk. Tho actual position was ascertained to be that 14 men had applied for work through tho Labour Department and tlireo direct .to the Public Works Department.
Generally speaking, j\lr. Fraser stated, his Department was in a position to meot all demands made upon it for cniploymont. ;
