Mr. R. J. Cooke, the well-known exfootballer.' who, with Mrs. Cooko, is leaving Timaru to reside in Melbourne, was entertained at Timaru the' other evening by a number of friends and presented with a purse of sovereigns.

Mr. Oliver Smith died at Georgetown, near Oamaru, last week, at tho ago of 102 years. Ho was born in the Shetland Islands, and had been in New Zealand for thirty-seven years, Ho never had an illness sufficient to mako him stop work for a day, and his faculties wero unimpaired light up to tho last.
