EASTBOURNE'S ADVANCE.

HONOURING MAYOR AND COUNCIL. A meeting of tho committeo appointed by tho residents of Eastbourne to control tho forthcoming function to bo tendered to the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Organ) and councillors, as a mark of

tlie residents' appreciation for tho services rendered by them in connection with tho municipalisation of tho ferry service, was held on Thursday night in Wise's rooms at Eastbourne. Mr. J. P. Kelly presided over a crowded attendance or residents. The chairman,

thanking tho various committees for tho worK done, said tho occasion marked an epoch in tho history of tho iiay, and it was duo to tho residents to pub-

licly thank tho men for their splendid achievement in completing negotiations so expeditiously and well. Thero was

uo doubt, ho said, that tho municipal control would prove a big factor in further settlement taking place in the Bay. If the attractions were systematically advertised, and its residential qualifica-

tions spread broadcast, coupled with a judicious reduction in fares from time to time, thero was not tho slightest doubt that within a few years the place would treble its population. Tho occasion could not pass without thorn showing their appreciation and confidence in the men who had been tho means of giving tho residents control of their own steamers and tho opportunity of working out their own destiny. Tho programme for this evening will be ft very fine ono, and includes itomß by tho Orpheus Quartet, Miss Cecils Haines, Betty Purdom, E. Luks, Roland Digby,. J. Culford 8011, and Stanley Rankin, in addition to an orchestra of twenty instruments, provided by Mr. M'Laughlin. A special steamer has boon provided for the convenience of townspeople, leaving tho wharf at 7 p.m., and. returning after the function.
