DELEGATES MEET.
AIDS TO IMPERIAL IDEALS.
Delegates representing the Dominion branches of the Overseas Club met in annual conference in the Town Hall yesterday. The Mayor (Sir. J. P. Luke) presided, and tiiero were also present the following: Messrs. A. M. Myers, M.P. (Auckland), T. J. Martin (Wailii), J. A. Hanan, M.P. (Invercargill), H. M. Haycock (Palmerston North), Robert Gardner (Palmerston North), T. A. 11. Field (Nelson), H. Langford (Ohnstchuroh), John l' 1 . Grierson (Ghnstchurch), Albert Kayo (Christchurch), Dr. J. M. Warren (Marton), Captain W. do 11. Barclay (Wellington), and the New Zealand secretary (Mr. J. K. Macfio).' Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. D. K. M'Adam (Oama.ru), J. F. M. lfraser, K.C. (Dunedin), C. Ford (Dunedin), S. A. R. Moir (Huntorville), E. B. B. Boswell 'Westport), J.'R. Kirk (Gisbcrne), and ;. Laidlaw (Auckland). Myers, vice-president, cxlained later that an attomprt would robably be made to affiliate the Victoria icague, Overseas Club, and similar oranisations into one body, while allowig each to maintain its own identity nd carry out its own special objects. Tho question of bonfires was next liscussed,' Mr. Haycock objected to ho time of tho conforenco boing taken ip with such an unimportant matter, put other speakers did' not agree with inn, and eventually on the motion of Jr. Kayo it was rosolvedi: "That when lossible a bonfire : bo lit somo prominent position iti tW l(S6|lity <tf i ea<Jh\ • Mr. Kayo moved 1 , , and Mr. Martin eoonded, a motion td the effect that he birthday of the clfb (August -27) ie suitably celebrated in the different entres.—Carried. . On the motion of Mr. Haycock, it was lecided to leave to the-, discretion of ,he local chibs the question of cooperating with other bodies in affording issistanoe to those in distress in the )ld Country. A resolution was earned recommendng the Executive Committee of tho Auckland branch _ to' consider the addisability of erecting a "welcomo hall it the Aiiokland Exhibition or of making some other suitable arrangement._ It was further decided, on the motion Df Mr. Gardner, to co-operato with < sindired societies in furtherance of objects of common interest. Another item on the order paper was: "Arrange a suitable ceremony for use by sohool and kindergarten teachers, expressive of individual service to the Empire and to inculcate Imperial ideas in the children."—lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of tho Auckland delegates to formulate, a scheme a<nd communicate with tlio Dominion Council. : Dr. Warren moved that an addition be mado to the rules providing that all remits for tho conference shall bo sent in at least six weeks prior to the mooting, in order that they might' be circu-. lated among branches and replies received from them.—This was duly seconded and carried. It was decided, afteT considerable discussion, to inform branches that if they wero anxious the Dominion secretary should obtain and keep supplies of badges and certificates , for .members, t'boy (the branches) should communicate with him. Tho lion, treasurer's report, which was adopted, • showed that all branches had not paid the special conference levy of £1. . On account of this laxity on the part of branches, Mr. Haycock moved: ''That the Dominion treasurer writo forthwith to the clubs, who had not yet paid tho spccial levy of £1 for the conforenco of January, 1913, asking them to do so within a month."—This was carried. It was decided to direct all branohesto send in quarterly reports giving the name of the. president and secretary of such branch. The Dominion Council rules wero adopted. . Regarding branch meetings, the Dominion secretary was instructed to circularise clubs with suggestions as printed and placed before tho conference. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Dominion secretary (Mr. J. K. Macfie, Dmiedin) for his efforts on behalf of tho club. A resolution was also passed sympathising with two officers of tho Wailii Branch (Mr. IT. T. Gibson, president, and Mr. D. Johnston, secretary), who had been laid aside with illness. THE GUINEA POEM.
