The Northern Branch of the Wanganui District Teachers' Instituito met on Saturday, and passed the following resolutions dealing with . teachers' salaries "(]) That members of this branch emphatically endorse tho opinions expressed by many of tho House and by tho teachers of this Dominion with respect to tho utter inadequacy of the proposed increase in teachers' salaries; (2) that this branch is of opinion that tho on'tranco salary for pupil teachers is much too low to suit, and it is difficult to get lads to enter the profession; again, many of those who do enter, do so_ simply to maio ' teaching ft stepping-stone to other more lucrative callings; (3) that under present conditions the increased increment of £b yearly would not materially lighten the lot ol teachers in tlie baokMocks, who are in many cases receiving a mere pittanco (sometimes less thru 053. a week for a married man, which would be brought up to only 375. with tho proposed addition), and who labour under many disadvantages (due (o their isolation), such as. the cost of correspondence, tuition in order to pass examinations, lack of social and professional intercourse, difficulties of securing suitable residence, adverse conditions under which many teachers have to livo in newly-set-tled districts, to, say nothing of tho increased cost of living and the responsibility of their.office; (■!) that the proposed increaso does not affect those teachers (of whom there are a groat number) who have already reached the.maximum salary of their grade, and who, in consequence, would not benefit, ins they do not receive any increment; (5) that a general increase is desirable, especially on account of the increased cost of living nffflctinfr one niid all, and also to briiig teachers' salaries more into line with those of other Government servants; (5) that-on account of tlie increased cost of livintr since .salaries were last revised, the Government he asked to pay every teacher a maxinrim salary for the present grade as from January 1, MM, and that after December 31. 1914', tho pnlary of every teacher be shifted up one grade with tho usual increment of per annum. That js-to say frojn January 1, 1915, a Grade 3 teacher would receive a Grade 4 salary; a Grade 4 a Grade 5 salary, and a Grade 9 a Grade 10 salary."
