BRUTAL ASSAULT.

IN AUCKLAND THOROUGHFARE. (By Tolctriupli.—Sjcclal Correspondent.) Auckland, August 15. A brutal assault was roudo on a young woman, Miss Mary Marvin, in Clyde Street, off Angioma Street, last night, by a man wlioso noino is ut prcsont uuknown. When a reporter called at tho house where Miss Marvin resides with h«r sister (Mrs, Dean), tho injured woman was sufficiently recovored to give particulars of tho assault. Sho stated that sho had spent tho ovening at her brother's houso in Clarence Street, l'onsonby, leaving there about 9.30 p.m. She proceeded by tram as far as Anglesoa .Street, where sho alighted. As sho was approaching Clyda Street, which is a narrow, dark thoroughfare off Anglesoa Street, sho hoard footsteps behind her, and she was presently brutally assaulted. She described tho assailant as a tall man wearing dark clothes, In tho struggle sho sustained severe injuries. A littlo later a neighbour named Mr. John Latimer and bis daughter and son-in-law (Mr. and Mrs. Marltey) wero leaving the latter's houso to accompany a guest homo. As they left their door they heard groans from the opposite sido of tho road near Clydo Street, and saw Miss. Marvin staggering down Anglesea Street. Sho was calling out, and, as sho got near them, sho moaned out: "Isn't anyone going to lielp mc?" They wont over to her and found her in a state of collapse, with hor faco badly bruised and coverod with blood. Sho pointed down tho street saying "Ho ran," and Mr. Markey wont down tho street in pursuit. It was soon evident, however, that the man had a good start, and tho chase wag given up. Mrs. Dean (sister of Miss Marvin, states that there lmvo boon numerous complaints in 'the neighbourhood, and that, more than once, a man has been seen prowling suspiciously round tlia houses,
