A passenger for Sydney yesterday by tho Mooraki was llr. J. A. Clements, golf ohampion of Now Zealand. _ Mr. Clements will bo a competitor in • tho open golf championship of Australasia, wJrich .will open at Sandringham, Melbcurno, on August 29.
Mr. T. A. Munro, of Mangaweka, was a passenger for Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. v
A statement has been circulated in tho Tauraugu and Waikato districts to the effect that the Hon. W. H. Ilerries will not be a candidate for re-election for Taunanga at the next eleation, but that ho will probably be a candidate for Waitemata. Mr. Herries, when ho was questioned on the subjcct last nisfht, gave tho statement an absolute denial.
Tho death of Mr. H. Hardwicko Dyer occurred at Eastbourne on Wednesday evening. Tho deceased, who was a son of the late Dr. William Dyer, 6urgeon, Hon. Bast India. Company, S.. of Parnell, Auckland, came to New Zealand in tho ship Joseph Fletcher, in 185'3, and took up farming in tho Mahurangi district, with his brother, the lato Mr.' R. C. Dyer, of Cambridge, "who predeceased him by a year. In tho year 1874 ho entered tho service of tho Wellington Education Board, and bccamo headmaster of tho Patea District High School, and subsequently of the Karori School. Ho retired from the service in 1906. wife, who was a daughter of the late Major-General Boddeley, formorly Colonel Commanding the R.E., in Auckland in § 1853, prede-, ceased him at Khandallali in 1909. lie leaves a family of five—Mrs. G. C. Heenan, late of Taranaki; Mrs. H. G. Vickers, and Miss Dyer, of Eastbourne; Mr. H. B. Dyer, of Eastbourne; Mr. H. B. Dyer, of Masterton; and Mr. W. B. Dyor, of Hamilton.

An old Ashburton identity, in the person of Mr. W. J. Silcock, passed away on Thursday morning after a protracted illness, <vt the ago of 66 years. Mr. Siloook, who was a nativo of tho Nelson province, arrived, with other Nelsonians, in the Ashburton county in -the early pioneor days, oJid experienced many of tie upa and downs incidental to pionoer life. Ho loaves a wife and a grown-up family of six eons and two daughters.
Mr. G. A. Kissling, who has been manager of tho Manaia branch of the Bank of New Zealand for some years, lias received notice of his transfor to Kaiapoi, for which ho will leave shortly.
Mr. J. Hanan, M.P.„ and Mr. L. M. Isitt, M.P., went south by tho Waliino last evening. Mr. W. W. P. Hall, manager of tho Milton branch of tho Bank of Now Zealand, has been transferred to Rotorua, and Mr. H. W. Hilton., manager at N«soby, will succeed Mr. Hall at Milton.
Constable James Heard, who has boon in olwirgo of the Cavereham polioo station for somo years, has retired from tho forcc, and. intends leaving for Sydney. Ho was met at tho South Dunedin station on Tuesday, and presented by Sorgeant O'Connoll, on behalf of members of fli'o force, with a cose of pipes.
