AN AMPUTATED LEG.
INTERESTING POINT IN COURT. <By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston N., August 15. . At tho sitting of tho Arbitration Court yesterday, Mr. Justice Sim presiding, an interesting point concerning an amputated leg was considered. Tho chief question at issuo was whether a man with a leu amputated so as to leavo tho stump, to which an artificial l<w could bo attached, could bo said to suffer total or partial loss of tho leg.
Mr. A. A. S. Mentealli, of Wollincton, counsel fyr tho defendants, tho Tiratu Sawmilling Company, Dannevirko, contended that it was immaterial whethel tho amputation was above or below tlw Uneo £o long as the stump was left. He quoted tho case of a member of tho Health Department who had an artificial leg and who played golf and rode a horse. Therefore, it could not bo said that a man with a stump left to attach an artificial leg to was totally incapacitated. In tho present caso tho plaintiff, James Hannen, had a leg amputated above tho knee. Tho Court held that tho incapacity was only partial and gave judgment on that basis for <£211 7s. Gd. without costs.
