HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Hutt Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor (Mr, E. P. Bunny) presiding. Councillors . Hobbs, Ball, Parsonage, Cleiidou, Kempthorne, Meldruili, Hodgins, and Dawson were also present.
Two letters wero received from tlio Petone Borough Council, the first intimating willingness to support the council on the question, of approaching Parliament with a view to the Hutt Park Committee obtaining permission to train horses on. the Park. ' The second communication was with 'reference to the western branch of the' Hutt River. The letter suggested that a committee, consisting of representatives of the Lower Hutt and Petone Councils and the Hutt County Council, be set up to consider the matter. The Mayor and Councillors Parsonage Hodgins and Meldrum were appointed a committeo to represent the council.
Messiu Bunny and Ayson forwarded a cheque for £SOU, for deposit on behalf of a client by way of temporary loan. Requests by the Hutt School Committee that asphalt crossings bo put down from the Railway Hotel to the sclicol, and from the hotel to Donnelly's Corner, for the convenience of tho children attending tho school, wero acceded to. It was decided to call the attention of tho police to the destruction of the wattle trees and shrubs along the bottom end of Coromandel Road.
In lis fortnightly report, the Borough Engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) reported progress oil repairs to the Main Road from Laing's Road to Brunswick Street. The distance which had already been treated was 10.V chains, and tho area 3SS4 square yards, the cost being -£ll)l> 6s. Oil. Tarred crossings six feet wide had been put across streets at points directed by the council. House sewerage connections at Lower Hutt, issued under the drainage and sanitary by-laws, numbered 753 to date. Water connections numbered 907, one having been made during tho last fortnight—Tho report was adopted. The Railway Department wrote, exits willingness to bear the cost of shifting the cattle stops and fencing at a dangerous railway crossing in the borough. The Department were also contributing S'lo towards tho cost of repairing the road.—Received. The Wellington Rugby Football League wrote, asking on what tonus tho council would grant the use of tho Hutt Recreation Ground for representative matches. —The council decided upon the following terms: 25 per cent, of tho "gate" and £2 10s. in cash.
Two communications were received giving particulars of the Government's action in regard to minimising the risks at dangerous crossings. The first communication (l'rom the Prime Minister) stated that in reference to the council's motion on the subject the Minister for Railwavs had the matter under consideration—Receiver!. The second letter was from the Minister for Railways, and stated that instructions had been given to the various district engineers to report on the crossings in their respective districts which were deemed to be dangerous. The letter e.dded: "When these reports are receivd the question on the adoption of means of minimising risks will then be gone carefully into.".—Received.
