NOTES AND COMMENTS.
lEt Glmcoz.l The jumping season will be concluded this week, when the Grand National meeting coinos on for decision. Tho field for tho big Steeplechase is hardly up to the standard of previous years, but it is the best available, and is as good as has been seen out in any jumping- event this year. It promises to be a most interesting race, lor, in the last few <lays, the "market" has undergone ssvernl alterations, and tho eleventh hour fancy is The Native, who has done a lot of work, and has done it well. Paritutu lias hardly been extended since arriving at Eiccarton, but Bercol.i has been kept well up to th-e collar, and will bo the hardest to beat at the end of the long, trying journey.- In his tinal gallop ho finished alongside Co'ronettod at the end of sir furlongs, run in lny'n. 17kec. Glenmore is commencing to "whistlo" in his work, and may not see out the journey, but he always has a jumper's chance. The Spaniard has not dono much strong work since arrival at Riccn.rton, but his supporters aro very confident. Doramlo has not impressed the track watchers, but Nedra premises to be all there. Tho following are the probable starte.rs and riders in. t'he Steeplechase:—P-aritutu (It. Thompson), list. 91b.; The Native (J. M'Swoeuiy), list. 71b.; Bcrcola (Jerry O'Connell), list.. 31b.; Gianni ore' (W. Adams), list.; Tho Spaniard (Julian), list.; JJornndo (Mr. A. Gordon), 10st. 121b.; Nedra (D. J. Porter), lOst. 91b.; Gold' Pin (F. Douglas), 9~t. 1311,.; Captain Jack (11. Percival), 9st. 'Jib.; Eiro Atii (F. Tutchen), 9st. 71b.; lua Ora (W. Foilding), 9st. 71b. The-Winter Cup is a very difficult problem on track form. Awnhou stands out,-but the touts vote him overweighted. He is, however, a horse that runs on, ai/d this is a most important item up the long liiccarton straight. Kew and Kilrain both worked well yesterday, and so did Parky and Royal Arms. The latter has a nice woight, and runs on, well. Winter Cup starters and riders are: Grown Pearl (W. Young), lOst. 131b.; North East (R. Young), lOst. 911,.; Awahou (A. Oliver), lOst. 81b.; Bulletin (10. GrilFen), lOst. (Jib.; Kilrain (W. liyan), v lost. 51b.; Oxenhopo (R. Berry), lOst. Jib.; Sea King (l I '. E. Jones), lOst. 31b.; Glenfinnan (B. Deoley), lOst. 31b.; Mummer (F. D. .Toues), lOst. lib.; Diavolo (L. Wilson), lOst.; Kow (W. Price), 9st. 1111,.; Pilgrim's Way (James.Pine), 9st. 111b.; Ceylon (Sid K-cid), 9st. 91b.; Kilmeny ( —r), 9st. 91b.; St. Aidan (H. Donovan), 9st. 41b.; Royal Anns (R. Hatch), 9st. 21b.; Black Lupin (R. W. King), 9st.; Parky (H. Telford), 9st.; Buff C-auntlet (J. Beard), 9st.; Ladrono (J. M'Clusky), 9st.; Gerbera (lioll), 9st.; llongahere (j. M'Combo),' 9st. A lot of "unknowns" figure in the'Huhters' Hu-rdles, but the public are likely to select Roromai—an inmate of J. Williamson's stables, who has been working with Watchchain. Tho Trial Hurdles field is a very weak one, and favouritism will lie between Prince Eddie and Morning. The Jumpers' Hat event usually 'gives a lino for the National Hurdles, and, on this account, the form is especially interesting. On the tracks nothing has gono so well as Coronetted and Goodwin Park. Rufus and Major .Webb are the most fancied in the Tally-Ko Plato, while in the Eniield Stee.ples form points to Tim Dcolan and Tho Ranter. A big field will contest the Avonliead Handicap, and several of the runners will be well fancied. Tree Lucerno (A. Oliver) may finish up favourite.
