Christchurch, August 11. - Indications this morning were not at all promising for the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan-Trotting Club's August meeting, with wliidi the Grand Ntittional week's carnival opened. However, rain ceased before the racing commenced, and the weather, though dull, was not unpleasant. Under the circumstances there wn9 a very good attendance, and the track was in very fair order. Showery weather was experienced at Ricearton this morning, but nevertheless a largo number of horses were worked. The sand track, on which most of the . work was done, was ill capital order and provided fast going. A tai.r number of those out were given sprinting tasks, but the majority wero indulged in half to throe-quarter pace work. Kilts and Gilt Edge run half a mile on the sand in 50 2-ssec., while Ngatiruanui junipqd a couple of flights of hurdles very neatly. Oxenhope, pulling, hard, .did half-pace work, and Royal Medal was given a threequarter pace gallop on tho plough. Glenmore was not extended, and Theodore occupied 55sec. while running half a mile. I Roromai and Napper Tandy covered seven furlongs in Imin. 34jsec., while liandalero was going better than Buster and Ramrod at tho end of half a mile, run in 54 2-sscc. Pilgrim's Way spurted three furlongs on tho tan in 40 2-ssec„ while on the same track, Ceylon and Waitoto ran half J a mile in 50 3-ssec. Bui! Gauntlet and Ngatiruar.ni wero companions in a three-furlong sprint on the sand, while Awaliou registered a really good performance in defeating Mummer over seven furlongs in lmin. 30 4-ssec. North East was going very nicely at tho end of sever. furlongs, run in lmin. 31 2-5 pec., while Thrax and Bulletin sprinted three furlongs. Nithsdale and Forest Belle ran half a mile very pleasingly, and Coronettfd and Bercola rattled over six furlongs in lmin. 17|sec. Nedra was given three-quarter pace work on tho plough, while P.ibstono Pippin did not give by tiny means a pleasing display when jumping a couple of flights of hurdles. Kilmeny and Hie Cornet rattled over ■ half a mile in 50sec., and Dorando defeated Stevens over seven furlongs in 1 min. 3Ssec. Kilrain was going better than Kew at the end of seven furlongs in Jmin. 33sec., while Sphinx went once round over tho hurdles. A deputation'from the South Canterbury Hunt Club asked the Agriculturaland Pastoral Committee for a donation to its funds on the ground that tho Hunt assists tho association to achieve one of its objects, viz., improving the breed of light horses, and alro serves a valuable national end by helping to ensure tho breeding of -horses suitable for army remounts.
