THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.

"Theosophy and tho Empire Movement," the subject at the Theosophical Society last evening, attracted'a large attondanco. Mr. J. 11. Tlioinson outlined a scheme which is taking shape in Great, Britain for the uplifting and regeneration of the Empire. The object of tho scheme, ho 1 said, was to draw together for mutual aid and oommon action men and women of good-will, from ail classes, for the servi-co of tho Empire. Those interested in tho movement felt that in face of. tho widespread iiwhistrial and political unrest, some concerted action was necessary in order to preserve from destruction the results of civilisation, and to avoid another period of barbarism, such as those which had followed the upheavals of tho past. Tho use of legislation to initiate peace-meal-reforms—involving inevitably widespread social and economic changes wliich were left out of consideration—was, ho urged, full of danger. True servants of the Empire, l ho said, would substitute a weilcorisidered and thorough social reconstruction, based on knowledge, shaped and directed by tlie - wisest and best of tho nation, invoking and guiding self-sacri-fi.ee -to make it practicable, seeking lesrisQntion only when voluntary co-operation failed, and then as forming part of a comTflefcq scheme, and not as a hasty hand-to-mouth palliative. It would be a reconstruction deliberate and gradual, but having as goal the evolution cf a social order which would ensure a piiniireum of well-being to every in an, woman, and child within the Empire, so tliiat each might bo able, to develop to tho full the facilities which, he brings with him initn the world!. Mr. Thorn son'is final lectures will be advertised in The Dominion.
