MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
"THERE'S MANY A SLIP." A woman named Isabella Cochrane pleaded guilty to stealing two ladies' dresses, value £1 155., tho property of Nellie Nightingale, second-hand dealer, Lambton Quay. It appeared the accused was employed by Mrs. Nightingale, but the previous day she left, after which tho two dresses were missed. As accused was leaVing, one of the stolen dresses, which' she was wearing on top of her own, was seen to slip down to tlie ground. This had been recovered by tluj police, but the other, value 255., was still missing. It was stated that accused was a respectable woman, with a large family, but that drink was her failing. A gentleman interested in Tier "had offered to pay the value of the missing 'dress. A year ago accused was bound over to come u.p for sentence when called- upon, and on her _ plea to be given another chance, a similar course was adopted on this occasion.
ALLEGED THEFT OP OVERCOAT. A second charge of theft was preferred against Ronald Stewart, who was tho previous day remanded until Wednesday next, and consequently he was remanded until then on this charge also, which was one of stealing a man's overcoat, value £2, tho property of Richard Delaney, and to which ho pleaded guilty. OTHER CASES. "This particular class of, beastly language is becoming too frequent," said Inspector Hendry, when Joseph Graham pleaded guilty to nsing obscene languago in Taranaki Street tho previous day. Accused was committed to prison for fourteen days, without tho Option of a fine. George Lucas, who was found dTunk in Ghnznee Stroot tlie previous evening, and against whom there woro throo previous oonvictions for a similar offence within tho last five weeks, was fined 10s.
