Referring to a question asked in Ui» House of Representatives by Mr. Dickson, momber lor Parnell, concerning tho use of featlieT beds, carpets, and hcatera by English offioers at the Palmerston camp, a "Standard" representative made inquiries and. found,! in tho first place, that there were 110 English officers in oamp at all, that those in Palmerston ait the time were there vis instructors and staying at hotels, paying nejisomaliy any expenses above tho camp allowances, they baing granted the privilege of lodging outside tho camp owmg to having io remain six weeks in tho town, whereas tho territorial offices had to remain three weeks at roost—eojno only a w<Jeik. Japanese matting was' provided by the Defence Department for use by territorial officers and noai-coms. in camp, while tho temporary barracks was also heated at the Department's expense. The mattresses used were personally hir'ed by the men.
