Tho Countess of Liverpool has signified her intention of being present at the complimentary concert which is to lie tendered to Mr. Herbert Bloy at the Town llall to-morrow evening. Mr. Arthur A. Paape, at present organising secretary for tho Sports Protection League, has been appointed organiser for tho Reform League. Mr. T. W. Whitson, relieving manager for the Union Company, who has beeu stationed at Wellington for the past tow weeks, left for the south by the Mararoa on Saturday. Mr. W. A. Kennedy, who has been on holiday leave, returned to the office on Saturday morning. Mr. P. W. Burbidge, the distinguished Victoria College 'stuaent, who was recently awarded "the 1851 Exhibition Scholarship for scientific research, left for England on Friday last. Mrs. Crewes, the wife of the Eev. John Crewes, who died' at Newtown on Friday, was well known as an unobtrusive, but diligent, worker in sovoral circles. She was worn at Asliwater, in Devonshire, in 1850, and later resided in Plymouth, where, in 1877, blid married tho Rev. John Crewes. In 1879 she came with hex husband to live in Christchurch, Now Zealand. Her liusband was then an accredited minister of tho Bible Christian Church, a Methodist Church new merged with tho Methodist Church of New Zealand. During tho whole of her lifetime she was connected with tho Methodist Church, and although of a gentle disposition she was always at the side of her liusband in dealing with political and social, as well as religious, matters. In 1890 she oame with her liusband and three children to Wellington, where sho resided up to the timo of her decease. Sho was a kind-hearted woman, and her loss is mourned by a largo number of friends. No person whom she could help ever waited long for assistance. Deceased is survived by her husband, threo sons, Messrs. John Crewes, grocer, Tasman Street; Fred Crowes, associated with h\s father; ami W. Crowes, with Recketts' Oversea, Ltd., and one daughter. Miss Mary Crewes. Mr. H. N. Holmes, formerly scoretary to tho Y.M.C.A. in Wellington, has been appointed national organiser for tho Y.M.C.A. in South.Africa for a term of two years. , ■ Mr N. Mcfcalf has been appointed green-keeper and caretaker of the Lyall Say Bowling and Tennis Club, out of seventy-two applicants. A notice iu a supplement to tho Gazette, published on Saturday, announces tho appointment of Colonel li. S. Heard as Commandant of tho New Zealand Dot'ence Forces during tho absence from New Zealand of Major-General Godley. Tho Hon. C. Lonisson arrived from tho south by tho Wahine yesterday. Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.l'., has signified his acceptance of ono of the vice-presi-dentships of the Wellington Amateur Operatic Spcioty. Sir Joseph Ward lias accepted an invitation troin the members of the Now Zealand Club to a luncheon on Tuesday next, August 5. There will be two speeches only, viz., that of the Mayor and Sir Joseph Ward's reply. A band of 50 Maoris will take pari in tho proceedings at the station'and Town Hall. Mr. H. C. Dawson, manager of the freezing work's at Tokomaru Bay, is n visitor to Wellington. He is staying at the Empire Hotel. A well known and highly respected settlor of the Forty-milo Bush district, in the person of Mr. Robert Smith, passed away at his residence, Onslow Para, Haniua, this morning at the age of 70 years, says a Press Association telegram. Deceased, who formorly. resided ut Napier and Daniievirke, .came hero 22 years ago and l up till recently took a prominent part in local polities, being at ono timo chairman of tho Paliiatua County Council. He also took an interest in all forms of sport, being a 'life member of the Bush and many Hawke's Bay societies. He leaves a widow and a family of six sons. Upwards of CO employees of tho Gisborno Borough Council assembled last week for tho purpose of farewelling Mr. A, J. Paterson, late borough engineer, before ho left for Wellington. Mr. W. H. Buswell, borough olectrical engineer, who presided, presented Mr. Paterson with the following address, handsomely framed, and artistically illuminated by Mr. F. H. Forgo:—"To Mr. Andrew J. Paterson, engineer, —We, the undersigned workers on tlie staff of tho Gisborno Borough Count:ij, desire to convey to you our appreciation of your ability as an engineer, and our expression of deep regard for tho man we felt it a privilege to work with. Our sincere good wishes for your futui'o wolfaro and happiness will be with you, Mrs. Paterson, and children always." The address boro tho signatures of the heads of tho different departments and some 100 borough employees. At an impromptu meeting of tlio Gisborno Savage Club, to say good-bye to Mr. Paterson, on'behalf of the Club, Chief Savage W. F. Ccderwall presented Mr, Paterson with a case of pipes.
