SIR RICHARD COOPER.

MR. JOHN MILNE, SEISMOLOGIST. By Telegraph—Proso Association-Copyright London, July 31. Mr. John Milne, the eminent seismologist, is dead.

Mr. John Milne, F.R.S., F.G.S., mining engineer and. seismologist, was born at Liverpool in 1850, and educated at King's Collcgo anil tho Royal School of Mines, London. lie worked in Newfoundland and Labrador as a mining engineer, and was geologist to Dr. Beko's expedition into north-west Arabia. For twenty years ho was in the employment of the Japanese Government as geologist and mining engineer, and established the seismic survey of Japan, embracing 968 stations. Later, lio established for the British Association a seismic survey of the world. 110 was tho designer of seismographs and instruments to record vibrations on railways, etc. His publications include: "Earthquakes," "Seismology," "The Miners' Handbook," "Crystallography," and many papers on seismology, geology, mineralogy, and mining.
