ORCHARD DEMONSTRATION
lIUTT VALLEY FRUIT GEOWING. A demonstration, in pruuing; fruit trees was by Mr. T. C. Webb, orchard instructor, at jMr. Ckvpiuau ■ Taylor's orchard at Silvorstrcam oil Saturday afternoon, and was well attended by "local residents. Several young men from tire city were ako present. .Mr. Webb, after showing how tho different varieties of fruit trees should bo pruned, jfavo an Address on fungus diseases ami insect posts. He explained bow they should be divided into two olasses—the sucking insect, which should ha*e a spray, coming in contact with its body, such as red oil emulsion, to kill it; and then thera were the chewing insects, which should have an arsenic spray, 6uch as arsenate' of'lead.'ljlb. to 50 gallons of water. Brief life histories wero given of the principal pests and fungus diseases. A lengthy talk on the "Prospects of tho Fruit Industry" was given, and many wore greatly interested, somo talking of extending their orchards. Several questions wero asked and answered. Ono question was, Is SilvOTstream adapted for fruit growing? To this, Jlr. Webb answered, "Yes, providing yom have plenty of shelter from tho prevailing winds." With that, the grower fad everything in his favour, as 'Iv 9 was near the railway and markets, etc. Votes of thanks were given to Mr. Chapman Taylor for tho loan of his orchard, and to Mr. Webb for bis instructive addressee
The Hawke's Bay Fruit, Produco, and Cool Storage Company, Ltd., has, says our Hastings correspondent, just issued its prospectus. The company is to take over tho business carried on for many years as the Hawke's Bay Fruitgrowers' Association. Tho new company proposed to establish at a railway siding in Hastings very extensive new premises including a largo cool store. Tho company is to havo a capital of £20,000 at the commen cement. It has over 100 commercial orchardists amonsrst its shareholders, thus assuring a regularity of supply. It is stated that the annual revenue from orchards in this ( district exceeds ,£BO,OOO. "Deeds, not words," is what every man looks for now-a-days, moro especially th? Cheeso Factory Manager who wants equipment that "makes good." Tho "Victor" Vat has proclaimed its efficiency in many factories this season, and has helped them to obtain bettor results—honce better returns. Tho "Victor" can help you, too.
