SAND DRIFT ON WEST COAST.
QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P. for Otaki, asked tile Minister for Lands yesterday whether lie would give the House somo definite idea as to the Government's intentions in dealing with tho sand-drift evil on the ivest coast of the North Island. Last session it was stated, he said, that definite areas would be set aside—one of which would bo iii the Otaki district—to bo dealt .with, the object being to arrive at tho best means of protecting the. lands 011 our coasts from the continuous encroachments of the sand-drifts. The' Hon. W. P. Maisey (Minister for Lands) replied:• The Forestry Commission recommonded that tree-planting operations should be carried out on a larger scale than at present, that sanddunes should lie some of the lands to be afforested, and that a beginning should be made on the dunes at the mouth of tho Rangitikei River. Operations aro now being started jtliere.
