M. MAETERLINCK AT THE CHATELET.
M. Maeterlinck's new play, "Marie Magdeleine," was given at the ChMtlet last month, with lime. Georgette Leblanc (Hme. Maeterlinck) in tho titlo role, writes a Paris correspondent. The house was crowded on the night of the "repetition generale'' with an audience of a decidedly literary flavour; the showy theatrical world was noticeably absent, and quiet clothes were tho result. Tho beauty of the play is undoubted, and a very erudite person said to me: "There are moments of sublime genius in it, and lino sentiments inspire tho whole of it." It is, in. fact, a play to read ami think about, and, difficult though the subject is to treat on. the modern stage, it is quite free from any of those violent attacks on the biblical story which 'have so often spoiled dramas of tho same kind. In tho first act Mine. Georgette Leblanc looks extremely beautiful in her draperies, but her interpretations aSoft whole,'of,a,, very difficult character, is open to a good deal of criticism. It is said that the play will be given in London later on.
