Races at Trentham. TEo second day's meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was decidedly dull and depressing from the weather point of view, und most people travelled out to Trentham provided with macintoshes and umbrellas. Failure of Men Designers, An English correspondent writes of tho revolt of tho French painters against latter-day fashions, and tho proposed exhibition of artist-designed gowns which was in preparation. This has just been opened at the Maison Buzenet, in the Avenue des Champs Elysces. Some of the Ix-st-known painters have contributed ideas. M. La Gnndara exhibited a mannequin in a gown of white satin, studded with simili diamonds and topazes, forming an immense butterfly back and front on tho bodice, with a large butterfly bow. On3y a daring woman would wear M. La Gandarn's gown, M. Robert Pielienot oxeroised his ingenuity upon a racing toilette. His .suggestion was a white frock with a design of black roses at, the hom. The white loo;e-ntting bolero was piped with violet, opening over a gnusgreen waistcoat. On the whole Parisiennes do not seem to have been very impressed with the male attempts at costume designing. They admitted that some of the artists had ideas, but they were not at all. sure that these ideas would prove workable. Indeed, the most effective designs in the artists' exhibition were duo to women, designers, and not to men. Apparently dress-designing is not for the amateur; certainly not for the male anrateur. . Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Beetham and Miss Boethani, ,who' have bern staying at the Royal Oak for the past few days, left on Saturday on their return to Brancepcth. Mr. and Mrs. F.
