It was previously a French protectorate. > When tho French gunboat Kerßaint arrived on Juno 9, the chiefs turned out to participate in tho annexation ceremony. The native militia paraded, and after a very effective march-past by tho latter tho chiefs formally handed over tho control of the islands to France. A salute of twenty-one guns was then fired. It is stated that a native Parliament will be elected.
